One skill that has sort of helped me is reading body language. As you may know, being able to read dogs really helps you keep you and the dog safe. My mentor helps me in reading dogs body languages. An example would be when a dog yawns it to relieved stress.

Throughout my externship it has been a challenge for me to get the dogs to listen to my commands. Mostly the big dogs. I figure out that they sense I am the new guy , they want to take advantage of me. Try to act tough and bark to intimidate me. My co-workers allow me to enter the play and show them who's in control. They also taught my hand signal command (sit, lay down, quiet, No, etc). Once they accept me and allow me to touch then my command start to work. I still have dogs that don't listen but overtime I will be able to control them.
For the past few days have been looking for an externship outside of school. I been looking to find an externship that had to do with something with animals. I eventually found one at the Fido country club. It is basically a country club for dogs. What I am afraid of is spending too much time clean animal waste and not getting a fair share of animal care. I do agree in clean waste is essential to animal care but at the same time it longer inspires me to continue my passion for this type of career. I hope to learn about animal behavior as I will start Monday of next week.
I will be working at Fido &Co. for the next three weeks. I will be helping the staff do daily dog daycare. My mentor Ian well be helping me with taking care of dogs.
