Throughout externship I learn a lot about dogs. Also learn the relationship between the dogs and my mentor and how they view him as the pack leader. I try to be the pack leader but I was only successful for the small dogs. The big dogs were harder to control in general. But overall I was able to build relationships with many of the dogs. My Co-workers were very happy that I was able to help when you had over 30 dogs. Many Dogs had owners that do discipline their dogs about home so it gets hard to discipline them at the day care. In general I hope to be able to work over the summer to gain more experience to help me in my path to becoming a veterinarian .

I first person I would like to thank is my grandma. I am grateful she was able to give me a ride everyday, She took the time out her busy schedule to take me to externship. The second person is my Mentor who help me be safe with all the dogs. The experience that I'm grateful is being able to get the dogs to sit. It still take more then one try, but I can still get them to sit. Though the puppies don't care about what I have to say, they just play.
My aha moment was when I could make the dogs stop barking without my mentors help. One skill that has sort of helped me is reading body language. As you may know, being able to read dogs really helps you keep you and the dog safe. My mentor helps me in reading dogs body languages. An example would be when a dog yawns it to relieved stress.
Throughout my externship it has been a challenge for me to get the dogs to listen to my commands. Mostly the big dogs. I figure out that they sense I am the new guy , they want to take advantage of me. Try to act tough and bark to intimidate me. My co-workers allow me to enter the play and show them who's in control. They also taught my hand signal command (sit, lay down, quiet, No, etc). Once they accept me and allow me to touch then my command start to work. I still have dogs that don't listen but overtime I will be able to control them.
For the past few days have been looking for an externship outside of school. I been looking to find an externship that had to do with something with animals. I eventually found one at the Fido country club. It is basically a country club for dogs. What I am afraid of is spending too much time clean animal waste and not getting a fair share of animal care. I do agree in clean waste is essential to animal care but at the same time it longer inspires me to continue my passion for this type of career. I hope to learn about animal behavior as I will start Monday of next week.
